Frog and Tadpole Die-Offs

In some cases large numbers of frogs or tadpoles suddenly die at a pond. The causes of die-offs may include disease outbreak, extreme temperature fluctuations, contaminant runoff, or other causes.

We have sampled several localities of tadpole die-offs in Central Florida in spring of 2005.  We collect the dead and dying tadpoles and return them to the lab for analysis in an attempt to determine the cause of the die-off.

If you observe dead frogs or tadpoles at a pond in Florida, please notify us immediately.  If possible, we will visit the site to collect dead and dying animals for analysis.
