Puerto Rican Crested Toad
Peltophryne lemur

Appearance:
Peltophryne lemur is a bit smaller than the introduced Bufo marinus.  Peltophryne lemur is about 114 mm SVL and has bigger crests and smaller paratoid glands than marinus. As implied by its common name, ridge-headed toads have prominent crests around the orbit that form a deep ridge on the top of the head, and a bony rim that projects around a shark like mouth.   Ridge-headed toads are black in color or are mottled black with white or yellow coloration. There may be an hour-glass pattern on their dorsum

Status/Range: It is not certain if the ridge-headed toad is on St. John. Bufo lemur does nest/breed on Puerto Rico and all Puerto Rican islands except Mona and Monito. This toad has become extinct in the British Virgin Islands.
